It is the third of the twenty-four solar terms, and the beginning of the month of Mao on the dry branch calendar; it occurs between March 5 and 6 on the Gregorian calendar, when the sun reaches 345° of the ecliptic. In the Moon's Seventy-two Hectories, "In the second month, everything comes out of the earthquake, and the earthquake is thunder, so it is called the Sting, when the stinging insects are frightened and go away."
This is the time when the weather warms up and spring thunder is gradually heard, so animals go into winter and hide in the earth without drinking or eating. This is the time when most of China enters the spring farming season.
